5 stars Could Earth Survive a Direct Hit?, December 20, 2011

`Two tall male forms walked from the ship toward them. This was it. It was obvious from their attire that they were not from this world. It was one of the coldest nights of the winter but the thin blue shimmering material worn by the visitors seemed more than adequate to keep them warm. One of the aliens began to speak. His voice was calm and welcoming. "I bid you peace. You have no idea how long we have waited for this moment to arrive." The two aliens bowed slightly under the moonlight while Will and Matt stood motionless and speechless. "Your friend is injured, allow us to help." One of the aliens had dark blue hair, when he moved away from the light it actually looked black. He motioned toward Art. When they didn't respond he picked Art up in both arms and carefully carried him up the small ramp and inside the ship. The other alien was a little shorter with shoulder length reddish brown hair. The shorter man did not speak but motioned for Matt and Will to follow. Once on the ship the door silently slid closed behind them and once again the ship seemed to vanish. Matt and Will were not the only ones amazed at the dramatic arrival of the aliens, the man who had shadowed them since their arrival at the airport was back. This time he watched, with high-powered night vision binoculars, from a clump of trees on the other side of the clearing. The stalker had shed his disguise. He would be much easier for Matt to recognize now. It was Matt's nemesis, Dave.'

Matt and Will were not just best friends, they were also partners in a venture to photograph and hopefully find answers to the mysterious masses of `crop circles' that had plagued the world for years. But, as time passed and the answers with it, Matt decided to split the partnership and take a real job. One that would keep him home where he and his wife Sara could hopefully start a family. But, as predicted by Will, Matt would soon become bored with his position at America's Pulse Magazine. At least that was the case until Matt and Will met Arthur Collins. Art was a computer whiz with CBT Electronics. He and his team were in the process of building a new super computer. Secretly he talked Matt and Will into allowing him to submit the data they had collected over the years into the new computer to see what it might come up with a pattern and therefore answers. The answers calculated by this super computer would change the lives of not just Matt, Will and Art but the whole world. By diagnosing the data, there appeared to be 3 symbols that kept appearing in the printouts. They were 001, 034, AH and 2,012. After many calculations 001 turned out to be San Andreas Fault, 034 - England, and AH - Averbury Hedge. 2,012 was the year which was 8 years into the future. The year Earth would be destroyed.

So, where do the aliens come into play? Are they here to help or to hinder? According to them, they aren't even supposed to be there. If their planet officials found out, they could face death. But can the trio believe what they tell them about the destruction of the world? According to them, Earth cannot be saved but the people can. How? There are millions of people on the planet and no way to get off and even if they could, where would they go?

I've read books that have kept me on the edge of my seat but Escape 2 Earth 2012 had me even holding my breath at times. Why? So many of the happenings are so possible. What are the pyramids really and how were they actually built? What is Stonehenge and who built it? Is it possible that there might be a planet out there that is on course to collide with Earth? Would our government even tell us if there was no way to avoid the collision? Escape 2 Earth 2012 is fiction but it sure makes sense of some of these questions. This is a truly intense book.

"Escape 2 Earth", by Lawrence Johnson was outstanding, excellent, something you can not put down until you are at the end. In addition, when you get to the end you will wonder what is going to happen next.
The book has many chapters that will keep your mind wondering how will I escape this earth we as humans' call home. I thought that I would not like a sci-fi book but this book is more than that it keeps your attention, with situations that we deal with in everyday life in this dreadful earth we call home. Also if you are looking for an escape from life for a minute than pick up the book it will be the escape you are looking for.

Escape 2 Earth is a clever 2012 story that held my interest from beginning to end. I was draw in by the originality of the plot. Hidden 2012 messages inside crop circles, a secret alien organization , far off galaxies and massive space ships what more can you ask for. Actually I do wish that the story was a little longer, other than that I think that it was a great book for teens and adults.

I Loved this book. It is a very well thought out story that is extremely relevant for our times. Mr. Johnson has a firm grasp of his chosen genre and it's penchant for sudden plot shifts and unexpected surprises. I am looking forward to the sequel: Return 2 Earth (I know it is available in e book format but I'm old fashioned and still enjoy the feel of the paper and the anticipation of turning the next page. I will upgrade to an e-reader when they can solve those problems.)

GBB: Good afternoon Mr. Johnson. Thanks for taking the time to talk with me about your science fiction series Escape 2 Earth 2012.

Larry: No problem, glad to be here.

GBB: Okay, let’s get right down to it. Escape 2 Earth, that an unusual title for a book. How did you come up with it?

Larry: Well, I get asked that question a lot. It’s a play on words. In the story there are two earths so by removing the word to in the title and replacing it with the number 2 I though if would get more peoples attention.

GBB: Oh, I see. While we’re on the subject of words I’ve noticed on some of your stories you are credited as Lawrence Johnson Sr. and other times as Larry J; what’s up with that?

Larry: For the past 3 years I have been asked to participate on sci-fi panels at Philcon’s conventions in New Jersey. I would always run into L. A. Banks. She was a great writer who recently passed away. Ms. Banks had always given me great advice. Her real name was Leslie Esdaile Banks. How many people would remember that? It’s the same with J.K. Rowlings. Lawrence Johnson Sr. is not the kind of name that sticks with you so I shortened it to Larry

GBB: Tell us about Escape 2 Earth 2012 and how the basic premise differs from most sci-fi stories about disasters or aliens etc?

Larry: A lot of sci-fi novels and movies tend to evolve around some experiment gone wrong of as you just said alien invasions and that sort of thing. Escape 2 Earth is a story about 3 men who have an alien encounter after deciphering a hidden code. They have to convince our government that planet earth will be destroyed but there’s a catch actually two catches. One, they cannot reveal their source, the secret alliance with the aliens and two; there is a dangerous, manipulative alien dictator from a distant galaxy who wants to wipe out the entire human race. So you see there are some major obstacles to overcome here.

GBB: Wow, that’s original, I’ll give you that. If this is a series aren’t you kinda of giving away the end of the first book?

Larry: No, not at all. At the end of book one we know that out of 6 billion people there are survivors but if you didn’t read the first book you don’t know who or how many survived, or which characters live, how they survived or where they ended up. There’s a reason why I called the sequel Return 2 Earth.

GBB: Okay, I see your point. You recently did a radio interview where you talked about your book vs. Roland Emmerich’s 2012 the movie. You didn’t seem very happy with him. Can you elaborate?

Larry: People always get this story wrong. Before 2012 Roland Emmerich had agreed to direct the remake of Fantastic Voyage. During that time I sent his office a copy of Escape 2 Earth. About a month later I received a letter from his people that basically said they were not interested. Less than 2 months after I received the letter it was announced that Mr. Emmerich had backed out of Fantastic Voyage and would do 2012 which he also co-wrote. I read somewhere that he didn’t even have a script. What he presented to the studio heads was an idea.

GBB: Are you implying that he read your story and made the movie without crediting you for it?

Larry: No, that’s where the controversy comes in. Although there are a few similarities Mr. Emmerich chose to go down a different path. No aliens, no space ships, no……… He’s the best there is when it comes to big screen special effects but his story was practically non- existent. The movie has over 150 one star ratings on Amazon. My point was that he missed an opportunity. I have the 2012 story and he would have been the perfect person to direct it. That’s what I’m saying. John Billingsley is an acquaintance of mine. I met him and his wife at a science fiction convention I was invited to a few years ago. John has a great range of acting skills. I mean the man can play practically any part. He had a very small part in the 2012 movie. In my opinion his talents were very underutilized. I told him that if I was ever given the opportunity to make Escape 2 Earth into a movie I would like to see him play the role of President Walker.

GBB: So you book must have been out for quite some time. How do you explain the resurgence? Why after all these years is it starting to gain traction again in the sci-fi world?

Larry: The answer to that question is simple. 2012 is just a few months away so anything connected to it will benefit. The similarities between what I wrote in the book and what ‘s been happened in the world since then is a little scary.

GBB: How do you mean?

Larry: The recent discovery of an earth-like planet, people constructing under ground bunkers, hidden messages inside crop circles, it’s all in the book.

But there’s more. Since the original version was released I have added 100 plus pages and had the book re-edited. My daughter has written a spin-off series. Escape 2 earth has evolved into three novels and by next year we would have released a dozen short stories.

GBB: You must be very proud of your daughter.

Larry: Yes, I am. She has been involved in one way or another since the beginning of this project.

GBB: I just have two more questions. Do you have a favorite character or scene?

Larry: Favorite character no, it’s just too hard to choose but I do have two favorite chapters. Chapter 14 Charade, it takes place on the planet Lazon. There are lots of twist and turns in this story and there is a major turn in chapter fourteen. My second favorite chapter is number 19 Exodus. This chapter practically wrote it’s self. I couldn’t get the words down fast enough. Everything so clear, so vivid, it was like I was right there on the ship with them. The fear, the danger, the uncertainty, it was all there.

GBB: Is it true that you use religion in all of your stories?

Larry: No, from time to time you may notice a hint or reference to religion. People who are looking for religion go to church they read science fiction to be entertained. Wait; let me back up a bit. I did write a short story a couple of years ago called Dimensions in Time. It clearly had religious overtones but that was the only one.

GBB: What’s on the horizon for you as far as writing goes?

Larry: Well my daughter and I have just donated books to the women’s shelter and to a local high school. I am currently working on book three in the Escape 2 Earth series. It’s called Earth 2 Redemption and Lauren has just begun the sequel to her first novel The Quest to Save Xanar. Since the series has grown so much we have just released Lexicon of the Spiral Galaxy. It’s a free companion guide from the Escape 2 Earth series, names planets, ships, events etc.

GBB: Thank you for joining me today. Maybe you’ll come back and talk to us about the rest of the books in the series.

The Teldaran and Earth dilemma’s was not only on the minds of Rayna and Earth’s Guardians, miles away a meeting of the powerful Planetary Alliance was about to convene. The Great Chamber’s walls were the meetings were held were covered with fine priceless works of art that had been gathered from various galaxies through the years. Soft blue light emanating from the oval table lit up the room.

Lazon’s Apex was the first to arrive, his long tan robe fluttered behind him as he briskly approached his seat at the head of the oval glass table. Shortly after his arrival the Emperor of Natropi entered the chamber, he was followed by King Ashnar of Deltor, Elder Manook from the planet Tygalon, King Zerlious of Xanar, and the Supreme Ruler of the water planet Nep’o. One by one the members entered the room, greeted each other and sat down on one of the gray high back chairs. Each chair was equipped with a panel that concealed buttons and switches allowing the members to vote or view images on the glass table in front of them. When the sixteenth member took his seat the Apex glanced over at the empty chair once occupied by the ruler of Otar and began the meeting.

The Apex was a straight forward leader. He was a slender middle aged Lazoian with short bluish black hair. His voice was not loud or commanding but somehow he had always managed to hold everyone’s attention and he was known for getting results.

"I am aware that you are eager to return to the celebration so I will be brief."

The first topic of discussion was weather the Alliance would open trade negotiations with the planet Rayos. The majority of members voted it down. The next issue was Galaron’s request to be considered to fill the seat in the alliance left vacant by the departure of Otar. The group’s consensus was that Galaron was not ready. Again the vote was no. For the fourth time in as many years the Planetary Alliance had sent scout ships to find out what happened to the inhabitants of the Planet Akanon and for the fourth time the ship vanished never to be seen or heard from again. So many ships have disappeared around Akanon that it had been nicknamed The Planet of Doom. Should another attempt be made to find out what happened to all of those ships? The vote was unanimous.

As the members pushed the little red buttons on the little console inside the arm of the chair the results could be seen on the screens inside the table in front of them. On this day the votes were consistent, no, no, and no. It appeared as thought the alliance members would be heading to the festivities early until the Grand Apex brought up the final topic for the day, Telderan.

Although a few thousand settlers had been living there for close to one hundred and fifty years the planet was mainly untouched. Most people did not want to live there out of fear of the Nex. Loosely translated it meant violent death. The Apex reminded everyone that as stated in the alliance charter before a planet could be terra formed an alliance colony have to live and gather data on the planet for a period of no less than twenty five years. The Emperor of Natropi rose from his seat.

"We are well aware of the rules Apex, our geologist and botanist have been living on Telderan for twenty two years now."

The Apex nodded and held up his hand.

"It has been brought to my attention that I’Rotart will attempt to claim Telderan and terra form it for Otar. After leaving the alliance he has abandoned our ways, disregarded our rules. Now his world is in peril and his people are suffering. By terra forming Telderan he would be able to solve many of his problems."

Zerlious of Xanar was also confused about this dilemma. The gray bearded King tried to lift his rather large frame from his seat but quickly decided that it was best to make his point sitting down.

"Otarians do not have the knowledge or technology to terra form a planet like Telderan. If he were to acquire such knowledge the settlers and our colony members would be in grave danger if he attempted to do so."

Elder Manook cautioned the group.

"I’Rotart is a foolish and desperate leader."

Manook was a short, stocky brown skinned man who wardrobe was mostly animal skins, he waived his stubby finger around the table.

"Do not forget my friends the prophecy’s of the Oracles, not just one Oracle but all of our Oracles have foretold of the day when a planet would leave us and clash with the blue planet called Earth. Rotart will attempt to terra form the planet Telderan and he will most certainly fail. The emitters that we have constructed around the perimeter of the colony and settlement may protect them from the deadly Nex however it would be of no use against the terra forming process."

The room fell silent, one by one the view screens were switch off, there will be no vote on Telderan on this day. If the Oracles were correct no matter what decision was made it was inevitable that Telderan and Earth would be destroyed.

It was midday on Lazon, the sea was filled with colorful boats of cheerful festival goers, some had traveled several light years from planets around the galaxies. Many adults were busy painting their boats in bold bright colors while the elder members prepared the food for the evening feast. Children on boats spread across the ocean were putting on the finishing touches to elaborate colorful lanterns made with intricate patterns and designs. At dusk the Festival of Life would turn into the Festival of Life just as it has for thousands of years, but this year was different.

The evening skies on Lazon had slowly turned from a powdery pink to a beautiful vivid orange when a large purple ship appeared directly over the area where the Planetary Alliance had set up their site along the beach. The bottom hatch slide open and a much smaller craft the same color as the mother ship flew down to the beach and landed near The Grand Apex and a few of the Alliance members. The figure exiting from the ship was no stranger to the Planetary Alliance, it was I’ Rotart.

Thousands along the beach drew closer to see what was going on. Landing a space ship was forbidden during the festival, it was a slap in the face to the ancestors as well as those who had attended this event. I’Rotart was tall and handsome with wavy black hair and a short beard. I’Rotart stood silently with his hands on his hips, his bodyguards stood by his side and behind him. His bright blue shirt and pants made him look even taller. The Grand Apex was angry; he approached Rotart but was able to hold his temper.

Without a doubt the most changeling case was also the most deadly. Up until then life had been good for the retired Alex Steele. Before the Death Dealer and the Case of the Deadly Ring, in the very beginning of Blackout Steele relaxed as he breathed in the warm air and took in the view of Christ the Redeemer from his hotel room’s balcony. It was Carnival in Brazil a time for him to recharge his batteries and reflect on his life. Had Steele know what laid ahead upon his return he may have chosen to extend his vacation.

Steele’s menacing foe was a deranged but brilliant madman known only as Chameleon. Steele had never read The Art of War but was familiar with the phrase “know your enemy.”

It was a painstaking process for Steele as his most ruthless foe expanded their mental chessboard from the streets of Philadelphia to the world. Chameleon racked up the body count as Steele tracked him to four countries and attempted to get inside the mind of this deranged psycho. The who, what, why, when and how were answers that a befuddled Steele found hard to come by. Logic as well as Steele’s target Chameleon was equally elusive and time was quickly running out.

The future of the United States as we know it was about to come tumbling down. If Chameleon had his way America would become a third world country in very short order.

Steele was making headway; he had started to put the pieces together when this high stakes game took another surprising twist. Steele the hunter has now become the hunted. He was Chameleon’s prime target.

Since the folks over at Escape Earth 2012 are selling tickets to board the USS Ark 2012 escape ship we decided to give you a tour of one of our 2012 Mega Space Ships for free.
Actually it's an excerpt from Escape 2 Earth 2012.

On a beautiful, breezy spring evening the president made good on his promise by allowing a CNN reporter and his camera crew total access to one of the first completed mega ships located in the Tiger Bay State Forest just a stone’s throw away from Daytona Beach Florida.

Art and Julie were already at Matt and Sara’s apartment at the White House when Will arrived. The guys had been inside a few of the ships on several occasions before but have never seen or toured a completed vessel. Matt and Sara made cocktails for their guest. They joined their friends who had already congregated in the living room around the TV watching as a handsome young African American reporter stood on one of four large ramps leading to the interior of the mega rescue ship named the Florida Sky Surfer.

“Good evening viewers, I am about to take you on an amazing exclusive tour inside one of the mega ships that will carry the millions of Americans to our new home on December 21,2012.”

As the reporter spoke the twenty foot wide dark brown conveyor belt like ramp slowly carried him higher toward the entrance. When the studio’s control room switched to a wide shot the massive, oval shaped, cream colored, city size ship came into view. The design of the space ship was not like any that you would normally see in movies. It was narrow near the bottom and widest in the center then tapered off near the top.

The large windows of the command center could clearly be seen at the far left a few decks below the very top of the new vessel. On the grounds near the ship a ring of ten powerful flood lights were trained on the glossy Sky Surfer. For many American’s this was the first live look at one of the rescue ships. More than thirty stories high and wider than five city blocks the first challenge was finding enough locations around the country for the flying cities to be constructed.

Under the glaring lights the cream colored ship appeared to look white, the windows, portals and doors of the exterior were all trimmed in navy blue. Once inside the reporter was greeted by six heavily armed shoulders, three on each side of the entrance.

The reporter paused briefly to offer a word of caution. “If any of you feel the urge to visit one of these fascinating ships I suggest you reconsider. The White House has made it perfectly clear that the ships are off limits to all unauthorized personnel. The first thing that I noticed was how low the ceilings are. I was told earlier by one of the engineers that the reason for the low ceilings was to keep the height of the ship lower.”

He turned to face a silver circular desk; behind the desk were a half dozen computers with blank screens. “This will be the check in station; it’s actually located on the third deck of the ship. The two decks below me will be used entirely for storage of supplies and various other necessities needed for the upcoming voyage.”

Before the reporter made his way down the light green corridor en route to one of the dining areas he pointed out the ships floor plan located on the wall to his left then to the soft lights above and alongside the wide hallway floor.

“In space there is no day or night” he explained “so the ship’s computers have been programmed to simulate the twenty four hour cycle by gradually diming the lights in the common areas at night and slowly raising them during what would be our normal daytime hours. I should also point out that the entire ship is climate controlled.”

Seconds later he strolled casually through the first huge white dining hall and sat at one of the tables. “This is one of five dining halls on this vessel; it seats one thousand people at a time. When the tables are removed it becomes what is known as a common area, a place for meetings, and other gatherings. The food travels via a series of computerized conveyor belts. Chefs and their staff in the kitchens above us will work in shifts twenty four hours a day to feed the fifty thousand passengers who will live aboard this ship for nine months so don’t even think about ordering room service.”

Light, soft colors of lime green, egg shell and baby blue were some of the colors that made the ship feel more like home. The CNN reporter turned tour guide led the viewers through the ship highlighting areas like the observation deck with the large picture windows, the jogging track that circled the entire top floor of the ship and the extensive hydroponics garden area where additional food, herbs, and spices would be grown.

The tour lasted a full two hours with stops at one of the security stations and the living quarters. The young reporter sat on a small bed in one of the tan colored apartments. “I gotta tell ya, this ain’t the Ritz Carlton. The rooms are small and the furniture is sparse. This unit is for a family of four, it has three beds, one table, and four chairs that are bolted to the floor for safety. There is room for storage but as you can see there will be no TV so you may want to bring along a couple of good books. ”

The tour was completed at the ship’s hospital. “The hospital, like the ship itself, is state of the art complete with fully functioning emergency and operating rooms. It looks like our alien benefactors have thought of everything including the fact that on a ship of this size you may still be miles away from the hospital so there are eight nurse’s stations placed throughout the vessel.” As the reporter signed off and left the ship Matt turned down the volume.

It was a picture perfect day when Will returned to his home town. A crowd of twenty thousand people, many wearing tee shirts with 2012, or pictures of the Mayan Calendar had gathered at Fairmount Park in Philadelphia to witness the unveiling of the latest mega ship.

Private detective Alexander Steele has been around for quite sometime. You may not have heard of him but that’s about to change. The concept for the original novel began back in the year 2000. By the time I got around to outlining, and summarizing the story in 2001the World Trade Center was hit. Since Alexander Steele’s story involved an attack on American soil by foreigners, I decided to scrap the book out of respect to the families and friends who lost loved on that day.

Fast forward to 2009, Alex Steele comes to life in his first novel titled Blackout. Before you rush out to pick up your copy I should tell you that Blackout has not been published yet. Below is a summary of the story also a link to the website. So here we are in the summer of 2010 and once again Alex Steele comes out of retirement in an attempt to prevent a huge shipment of lethal drugs from hitting the streets of Philly. Christopher was in a very good mood on this warm fall day. Although the sunny, September weather was the furthest thing from Chris’ mind. The tall sandy blonde haired real estate agent smiled as he passed the string of butcher shops, in a street lined with fruit stands filled with shiny apples, oranges, and all sorts of produce on 9th Street in South Philly.

Last night Chris and his buddy Tony went down to Columbus Boulevard to watch the drag races. Tony and Chris decided to place a little wager. Tony sized up the two cars in the next race, he was sure he had a winner. “I bet you two tickets to the Sixers’ Boston game that the green Chevy wins.” said Tony.

Chris shook his head as he walked down the street remembering the look on Tony’s face when the supped up Ford Mustang shot across the finish line first by a full car length. As Chris made his way past the thin crowd of early shoppers he was crossing a street no bigger than an ally when he heard someone calling out to him.

“Yo Chris, over here.” A stocky man with salt and pepper hair and beard motioned for him to come down the deserted little street. It was Kenny, his old nemesis from their childhood days. Kenny was the neighborhood bully but that seemed like a lifetime ago to Chris who was no longer afraid of him.

“What’s up Kenny? I haven’t seen you for a while.” As Chris moved closer he noticed that Kenny looked different, older. He wore a pair of old faded jeans and a blue plaid shirt. The guy he grew up with would have never been caught dead wearing something so common.

Kenny waived for Chris to follow him deeper into the little street that dead ended into a ten foot brick wall. “Come over here Chris, I just wanna talk to you.”

Chris stopped when he saw Kenny’s gray hair. “Hey man, aren’t you supposed to be in Holmesburg? I heard they got you on a double homicide.”

Kenny shook his head, “That’s a long story dude. Look, Tony told me that you were coming down here today. I need a favor from you.”

Chris kept staring at the old man who stood before him, not knowing what to make of Kenny’s appearance he decided to let him talk. When Kenny reached for the brown paper shopping bag on the sidewalk Chris took a step back and waived him off. “Look Kenny, you know I’m not into that shady stuff and besides my wife’s having a baby. I can’t afford to go to jail, especially now.”

Kenny smiled, “Yeah, I know. Look Chris, I know that you’re not going to believe this but I came here from the future, thirty years in the future to be exact.”

Chris laughed in Kenny’s face. “Those drugs finally got to you, huh?”

Kenny ignored the wise crack and continued. “I got a kid, a son. He’s nothing like me, he’s a good kid. His name is Antonino. In a way he sort of reminds me of you. He’s getting married; well at least he was going to before the explosion.” Kenny could see that Chris was not buying his story but that didn’t stop him. “He went to the caterers store on South Street a few days before the weeding. According to the Fire Marshall there was some kind of rupture and the whole place just blew up. They said it was something about a faulty gas line.”

Chris was losing patience, “Look man; I don’t know what the hell you are going on about. Don’t forget,” Chris pointed a finger at Kenny, “I know you. You have always been a prankster. I still remember when we were in the seventh grade and you switched Mr. Harrison’s chocolate candy with a laxative.”

Kenny laughed, “Yeah man that was great.” His expression turned serious again. “That was then, come on Chris, he pointed to his head, look at my grey hair, look at this beard. Look at the wrinkles on my face.” He reached inside the brown paper bag and pulled out a beautiful purple and white crystal the size of a golf ball. “I got this from some guy. That’s how I was able to come back. I need you to go back in time to stop the explosion in the future. I can’t do it now, I tried. It’s a catering shop on South Street. They think I’m crazy.”

Chris shook his head, “They’re not the only ones. Can’t you get somebody else to do this? Kenny shook his head, no, “not in this timeline, you’re the only one I know who’s still speaking to me. Rita won’t even talk to me.”

Chris was about to walk away. He was getting frustrated. “You dress different and act different but you’re still the same. Why do you keep disrespecting your mom by calling her by her first name?” Chris waived his hand, “Forget it. Why don’t you just tell your son before the explosion?”

Kenny pointed to the crystal; “I can only go back thirty years, that’s the way it works.”

Chris waived him off and started to walk away. “This is crazy man; you need to get yourself some help.”

Kenny was desperate, he needed to think fast. He called out to Chris; “your wife is having a girl, her name is Cynthia. Your daughter is marring my son.”

Chris stopped dead in his tracks. Kenny knew that he had his attention. “They are in love,” he yelled down the narrow street. “If you don’t stop this it will break her heart.”

Chris walked back to where Kenny was standing. “You’re a drug dealer, a thief, a con artist, and a liar. A liar who will say anything to get what you want!”

Kenny stared Chris right in the eyes. “So you finally grew a pair. There was a time that I would have whipped your ass for talking to me like that, but you’re right. I was all of those things, but I have changed.”

Kenny reached inside the brown shopping bag and pulled out a copy of the Philadelphia Inquirer. The newspaper was smaller and the paper it was printed on felt different. It was turned to the obituary section. He handed the paper to Chris who noticed that it was dated for September 27, 2040. Thirty years from now. After Chris read the article he handed the paper back to Kenny. His mood had turned somber.

In a quiet voice he said, “What do you want me to do?”

Kenny pulled out a change of clothes and a smaller bag with a red rubber band wrapped around it. Inside the bag was $30,000 in old bills and the address of the property Chris was to buy.

“Once you own the property you can make sure that the catering service is never built. Put a parking lot or something on it. I don’t care what you do as long as there are no gas lines running into the building.” Kenny instructed.

A reluctant Chris searched his mind for a better way. If this worked he could be stranded in South Philly in 1980, it was a frightening thought. “Hold it! Why don’t I just wait thirty years and tell them before he goes into the caterers?”

Kenny shook his head, “You won’t be there, in fact you won’t make the wedding either. I can’t tell you why, it might screw up the whole timeline thing.”

Chris accepted the old clothes ducked behind the dumpster and changed into the outfit that would help him to blend in with the others in the past.

“Here whatever you do don’t lose this, it might get cold.” Kenny reached inside the shopping bag and handed Chris a jacket. “In exactly two weeks you will be transported back to this spot but it will be as if you never left.” Chris seemed confused. “Okay Chris, since you can’t go forward in time you will come back here at the same time you left. Nobody will ever know that you were gone, except me. When I squeeze this crystal the portal will open and send you to wherever I am thinking at the time but it has a limited range so you will still be in South Philly.”

Kenny looked around to make sure that they weren’t being watched then squeezed the crystal hard. Suddenly an eight foot high circular portal of blue and white swirling, sparkling lights appeared at the wall. Chris took a deep breath before walking into the light. He noticed a slight smirk on Kenny’s face right before he vanished into the portal.

Science Fiction Freedom

Everyone knows that writers are story tellers. It’s our job to paint vivid pictures of what we see inside our minds. This is especially true when it comes to writing science fiction because what we see in many cases are images conjured up from the imagination then translated into words for the very first time. In my case visions of strange alien worlds in distant galaxies are the norm. Often times a picture or two can help the reader visualize what’s going on in the story. If you have ever been drawn to a novel and purchased it because you were intrigued by its cover then you know what I mean. Over the summer my daughter (who also writes) stumbled across a site called Science Fiction Freedom. SFF produces a quarterly e-zine called Sci-fi Freedom

Regardless of how well known you are every author would love to have more exposure for their work. In the fall of this year my short story Planet of Doom was given a boost when Sci-fi Freedom included it in their September issue. Owner/editors Peter Saga and wife Carole were hands on, their professional approach made the project fun and interesting. As I mentioned earlier photos help bring a story to life, well each story in Sci-fi Freedom has at least one photo. Illustrator/writer Lee Crystal was assigned the task of working with me to create the shot of the space ship Spirit being pulled down into the Planet of Doom. I think Lee did an awesome job.

Lee was also assigned to help create the image for a second short story selected by Peter to appear in the December issue. The story is called Terror on Telderan; it’s the prequel to Escape 2 Earth 2012. What! You say you never heard of Escape 2 Earth, well shame on you. The December issue is special to me because my daughter Lauren’s short story Paradise One was published in the same issue with Terror on Telderan.

My family and I will be making the trip to Philcon again this year but things will be more exciting this time around.
It’s not that I didn’t enjoy last year’s event because I actually had a great time. This time will be different for two reasons. 1) I have been invited to participate on four panels which is double the number from last year but the big difference will be the long awaited book launch of the sequel to Escape 2 Earth 2012.
For the past four and a half years my daughter Lauren and I have been writing short stories connected to Escape 2 Earth, so many in fact we have put several of them together in paperback and titled it Inside the Spiral Galaxy. Almost immediately after the release of Escape 2 Earth readers started asking what happened next.
I had been considering a sequel which is now going to be a trilogy and it appears that the Escape 2 Earth Universe has been born. What does this have to do with Philcon? Some of you may ask. Well the answer is the people, not only are they friendly most of them really appreciate a good science fiction story.
Very few ever talk about it but there actually two types of sci-fi cons, one for those who enjoy watching sci-fi movies and TV shows the other convention is for those who want the whole experience, the trifecta of science fiction which includes reading. With workshop panels including publishing companies and literary agents also panels covering everything from Dr. Who to True Blood it was clear to me that this crowd get’s it.

It is the perfect venue for the double book launch of Return 2 Earth and Inside the Spiral Galaxy. This will be an upbeat event so we are going full tilt with large sci-fi posters, refreshments and lots of special sci-fi related prizes. Two years ago I was invited to attend a science fiction convention loaded with TV and movie stars down in Dallas. It was fun but as a writer I really enjoyed my conversation with L.A. Banks and listening to John Maberry on last year’s panel at Philcon.

There are similarities: new technology, an exciting, but perhaps not very original plot and box office success. But thirty years into the blockbuster era, can anything match the impact of the original "Star Wars"

Last year was a blast. Last year I had a great time at the True Blood panel and the Doctor Who panels as well as the Buck Rogers panel. I got the chance to meet and chat with other great authors and I hope to do the same again this year.

I am looking forward even more so this year than I did last year because of the Return 2 Earth book launch and the contests that we will be holding. What do you mean by we? My daughter Lauren will also be avaliable to sign copies of her novella, The Visions of Koto-Ryin.

Everyone who arrives to the book signing will receive a ticket and will be eligible to win a prize. Everyone who arrives and buys a book in the Escape 2 Earth series will be eligible to win other kinds of prizes.

After the usual greetings Stan the tallest of the three men decided to get right to it. “So Steele, I see you’re back in the game, huh?”

Steele nodded, “Not by choice brother.”

The usual jovial Philosopher nodded at Stan, adjusted his glasses and gave Steele a serious look. “Well you know how it is, you called and here we are. I know you couldn’t say much on the phone so what’s the deal and how can we help?”

Steele ordered drinks for his friends and a Pepsi for himself. He explained the entire situation to the guys and waited for their response. While the Philosopher sipped his grey goose Steele slid the picture of Doctor D across the table.

When the Philosopher saw the photo he nearly spilled his drink. “Hey, I know that guy; we went to Morehouse together in Atlanta.”

Steele smiled, “I figured you would, that’s why I asked you to come. Dig up anything you can on him, no matter how small.”

The Philosopher shook his head, “That was ages ago and we really didn’t hang that much. Back then he was a pill freak, I see he’s graduated from more than just college.”

Stan briefly looked at the picture then tossed it on to the table as he spoke. “Yeah, he graduated alright, from popping pills to mass murder, what’s the world coming to? Steele, you want me to check this dude out?”

“Not him,” said Steele, “I want you to work your computer magic on the king pin Fat Daddy.” Steele gave Stan a small piece of paper with Fat Daddy’s real name on it.

Stan nodded, “I’m on it, by this time tomorrow I’ll be able to tell you what kind of toothpaste this guy uses.”

As Stan and Steele discussed his plan the Philosopher took out his pen and pulled out a small pad then began writing. He had heard about Sugar Bear’s lack of sympathy concerning the looming mass murder of hundreds. On his way out of the door he handed Sugar Bear the paper and simply walked out. It read, ‘Glass Houses - Life is like a finger print, each one is unique. Until you can duplicate my life's experiences, until you have felt my joy and pain, my victories, and failures you are not qualified to judge me, my decisions, or my lifestyle.’

Sugar Bear thought for a moment smiled then tucked the paper inside his shirt pocket. At the back of the club Stan noticed that something was not quite right with his friend. “Hey man, I know you’re supposed to be retired and all but it’s time to embrace who you really are.” Stan stood with outstretched arms as he looked around the club, “This is Alexander Steele’s playground he proclaimed, it’s a beautiful place,” he sat down across from his friend and continued, “but it’s not who your really are.” Stan opened his hand and put it on his chest, “Deep down inside you are a private detective, a damn good one, that’s what you were born to do.”

Stan spotted a familiar face near the front of the club and waived him over. Kenny was a tall dark haired man with a deep dark tan wearing an expensive beige suit. He made his way over with his beautiful girlfriend in tow.

Stan made the introductions; afterwards Kenny said “It’s a real pleasure to meet you Mr. Steele.”

After a bit of small talk the happy couple went over to the dance floor. Stan immediately turned to Steele and asked, “What do you think of Kenny?”

Steele was dumfounded by the question, “What do I think?” he repeated. “He’s not my type,” joked Steele. “Okay, I get it, you want me to read this guy. I see a happy couple out having a good time.”

“No,” Stan shook his head, “that’s what everyone else sees but what can you tell me about Kenny?”

Steele decided to humor his friend. “Okay, fine, let’s start with the easy part, judging from the white ring around his tanned finger it’s obvious that he has recently taken off his wedding ring and the fact that he has a deep tan and his girlfriend doesn’t probably means that he probably took the wife on vacation instead of the hot girlfriend.”

Stan was not easily impressed, “How do you know he didn’t get the tan from working outside in the sun? Maybe in construction?”

Steele burst out into laughter, “With those soft hands” he replied, “He’s more likely to be holding a doctor’s scalpel all day than a jack hammer and you don’t buy suits like that on a construction worker’s salary. That’s a custom made suit, it didn’t come off the rack.”

Stan had little choice than to concede that Steel’s observations were right. “So is that it Steele? Is that all you got?”

Steele laughed again, “Man, what do you expect? I only talked to the guy for five minutes. Okay, he’s not originally from Philly, if you listen closely you could hear a slight Boston accent, he’s left handed and Jewish, how’s that?”

Stan slapped his hand on the table in amazement, “Damn, how do you do it?”

The cool evening breeze didn't seem to faze the crowd of music lovers as they tapped their feet and bobbed their heads to the Latin rhythms of music legend Carlos Santana. The open air venue on the west side in Philly's Fairmount Park was the perfect night out for Alexander Steele and his longtime girlfriend Shakia.

Shakia ignored the occasional pungent scent of marijuana wafting past her nose, feeling the chill in the air as she tugged on her powder blue shawl and snuggled up closer to Steele. An interior designer by trade Shakia, dressed in royal blue pants and a white top she could have easily been mistaken for a model. When the concert came to a close Steele, the six foot browned skin ex-detective looked around as he stroked the corners of his mustache wondering if getting front row seats was worth the hassle of dealing with the crowds after the show.

As the two made their way through the crowd to the parking lot Shakia gently held on to his arm while the couple discussed the concert. Steele made a habit of parking close to the brightly lit parking lot lights in case an old enemy or two should be lurking about. It didn't take long for him to notice the small white piece of paper tucked under the driver's windshield of his midnight blue Jag.

He unfolded the paper and read the note.

'Steele meet me on the corner of 57th and Master at 11:00 tonight. It's a matter of life or death,' signed Trench.

Shakia folded her arms and looked toward the stars in the night sky, it was clear that Steele's usually calm girlfriend was upset by the note. "Oh hell no, what does that low life bastard want now?" Shakia was known for her kindness, she shared a mutual respect with just about everyone she knew but when it came to Trench respect went out the window and Shakia never held back. "He's bad news baby. Everything he touches turns to …"

Steele placed his index over her lips. When she noticed that more than a few people in the parking lot were watching she dropped her arms to her side and let out a sigh. Early on in their relationship she learned that Steele was a confident man who always made his own decisions. Not only did she respect him for that she admired his confidence.

Steele read the letter again aloud, "A matter of life and death," he said.

Shakia pranced around in a small circle, you could hear her heels clicking against the parking lot's asphalt, "Life or death alright," she muttered, "yeah probably his."

Steele checked his watch, 10:45. 'How did he know I was here?' he wondered. He explained to his Shakia that lives may be at stake; he didn't want that to be on his conscience.

It was exactly 11:00 p.m. when Steele rounded the corner and parked his car in front of the corner lot on Master Street. A few seconds later a black Escalade pulled up behind him.

Steele patted Shakia on the hand, "I won't be long baby."

Shakia watched silently as he got out of the car. She always joked with her girlfriends about his looks. She would say, he's like Denzel and Billy Dee combined, but she was always quick to add Billy Dee when he was in his prime.

Steele stood face to face with the man he had grown up with and had learned to despise. The stocky built man wore a dark blue jogging suite, his hair was cut close. His mustache seemed to grow wider when he smiled at Steele.

When Trench reached out to shake hands the small diamond studded earring in his left ear glistened through the darkness. "Alexander Steele in the flesh, man I wasn't sure if you were gonna show."

Steele pretended not to see Trench's outstretched hand, "Okay Trench, what's up? Why am I here?"

Trench stretched out his arms and looked around. "I got people around here, people who look out for me. I got wind of something the other day. There's a shit storm headed this way." Trench looked around again. "You sure you want to do this out here. I mean you got a reputation to protect and all, I didn't think you wanted to be seen with me that's why I left you the note."

The men sat inside the Escalade to continue their conversation while Trench explained. "There's a guy, a big time drug dealer named Fat Daddy. Him and some chemist got into a thing in Florida about six months ago about manufacturing a large quantity of pills, probably Ecstasy. Anyway it ended badly and Fat Daddy had his sister offed," he motioned as if he were using a knife to cut his throat. Trench nodded, "That's right; they found her floating in one of the back bays in Miami. According to what I've been told this chemist swore that he would get revenge for his sister's murder. Well it took a while but he is about to get even. He's created this odorless, poison to spray on Fat Daddy's next coke cocaine shipment. If it's true, and if it works, folks from Philly to Maryland are gonna start dropping dead within 48 hours after using the drug. Not only will it put the fat man out of business. The friends and family of those dead junkies will hunt him down and kill him like a rabid dog."

Steele reached for the door handle, "You don't need me, you need to go to the cops with this."

Trench grabbed Steele by the arm but when Steele gave him a nasty look Trench quickly let go. "Come on Steele, just here me out. I can't go to the cops. They'll ask me where I got my info from and besides you know how I feel about cops."

Steele took his hand off of the handle and eased back into the seat. "Okay, where did you get this hot news flash from?"

Trench gripped the steering wheel with both hands and stared out of the window before answering. "I got it from my cousin. Remember I told you I got out of the drug business, well, somebody once sad that 'Nature abhors a vacuum.' My cousin stepped into that vacuum; if I go to the cops they will bring him in, that's why I need you. What's your fee?"

Steele looked out of the window then back at Trench, "Man you know that I am retired."

Trench threw his hands in the air. "Okay, fine, who cares if a couple of hundred junkies die?"

Steele got out of the car and slammed the door. "Oh don't give me that crap. For years you ruined thousands of people's lives selling them drugs and all of a sudden you decided to grow a conscience?"

Trench got out of the car and walked around to the sidewalk to face Steele. "I'm doing it for my cousin, he's blood. If all of those people die Fat Daddy will be dead, out of business and when the heat dies down John will take over his turf giving him control of half of the city. I want him out of the drug business not further in."

Steele held up his hand, "Wait, do you mean Little John? Little John is your cousin?"

Trench nodded and waived his hand, "Yeah but don't call him that. He's got a big rep now and a bad temper to go with it and besides he ain't so little anymore."

Trench walked around to the back of his SUV, when he opened it Steele saw that it was loaded with all kinds of knock offs. LeBron James, Nikes, Aviator sunglasses, Prada, Sean John clothes, even a couple of pairs of Manolo Blahnik shoes. Trench fished through the sea of merchandise before pulling out a yellow folder.

"Here," he handed it to Steele. "I printed this out from the internet."

Steele held it to the light and thumbed through the dozen or so pages of stories about missing drug addicts whose deaths were of an undetermined nature.

Trench pointed to one of the papers, "You see that? From the Bronx in New York to North Philly it's always the same, unknown causes. It's odorless, colorless, and tasteless. He's been experimenting on those dudes and now he's ready." Trench held up both hands as if he were surrendering, "I tell you what, why don't you sleep on it and give me an answer in the morning?" He reached inside the SUV and picked up two pairs of the sunglasses, "Here, for you and your lady, no charge." Steele reluctantly accepted the glasses and agreed to give Trench an answer tomorrow.

After dropping Shakia off Steele went home and tried to get some sleep but his conscience wouldn't cooperate. His thoughts drifted back to grade school and how the kids used to joke about how God forgot to give Trench a heart. How do you do business with a guy who robbed a nun at age fourteen?

Two hours later Steele found himself driving through the roughest neighborhood in the city. No one in their right mind would come down here alone in the daytime and most cops wouldn't risk traveling through this part of town late at night but somehow on this dark and quiet night Alexander Steele seemed to be drawn to it. There was movement in shadows of the blocks and blocks of abandon buildings where it was commonplace to see hundreds of crack vials strewn about the sidewalk. The movement came from the remnants of lives that once had promising futures until somehow it all went wrong, somehow dreams were shattered and goals were forgotten. This was a microcosm of the millions who chose unwisely at life's fork in the road. These were the forgotten whose primary concern was not what to wear to work tomorrow morning but how to survive another day.

Up until now Steele had never given it much thought. Every now and then a homeless drug addict would be bold or desperate enough to step out of the shadows and approach his car asking for money. At that moment the cold stark reality had set in, Steele thought to himself that could have been me, or one of my friends. Deep down inside he knew that he could not just sit idly by and let them all perish.

Philadelphia Private Detective Alexander Steele has been around for quite sometime. You may not have heard of him but that’s about to change. The concept for the original novel began back in the year 2000. By the time I got around to outlining, and summarizing the story in 2001the World Trade Center was hit. Since Alexander Steele’s story involved an attack on American soil by foreigners, I decided to scrap the book out of respect to the families and friends who lost loved on that day.

Fast forward to 2009, Alex Steele comes to life in his first novel titled Blackout. Before you rush out to pick up your copy I should tell you that Blackout has not been published yet. Even though it's written by Pittacus Lore aka James Frey, the author of "A Million Little Pieces". Which was later dubbed A Million Little Lies because of the controversy that questioned the validity of Frey's accounts in the novel.

But this time since this is a science fiction novel, I don't think any more controversies will break out...will they?

At any rate, it sounds interesting, this is definitely a movie I'll keep my eye out for. I wish Michael Bay would by the script for my book. Oh well.

The SciFi Channel...sorry, "SyFy" has seriously dropped the ball in the past few years. It is no longer a channel for the scifi fans. Most of their programming consists of reality shows, wrestling, reruns, and weak one-off exclusives. It is time for a real science fiction network. This right here could be your answer. Please read.

Hi friends. All of you should know by now that we've been working over the last couple of years to create a new cable television network. This new network would be for SciFi fans and run by real SciFi fans.

We've been working very hard to come up with a plan that would be attractive and profitable to investors and still create a healthy, sustainable network that would be around for decades to come. We now have that plan. It's going to cost us $60 million to get this network going. Believe it or not, that's a very small amount to start a cable television network and it means we'll have to sacrifice for the first few years. It means very little original programming for the first five years of the network's life in order to keep startup costs low. There are investors out there who like the plan and would like to be a part of something this exciting. We've shown them a plan in which The Syzygy Network can reach profitability in four years.

However, that plan assumes that people will watch the network. The investors have told us that they don't simply want our word that SciFi fans would love to have a new network. They want proof.

I am not a big fan of sci fi remakes, War of the Worlds, The Day the Earth Stood Still and others have turned out to be disappointing however I am hoping that UFO 2011 will be the exception. I have been a fan of the original UFO since it first aired way back in the 70’s. I believe that UFO would have had a longer run if it had a bigger budget and more time to grow its viewership. I have had every episode on VHS for sometime now and last year I brought the full DVD set.

Based in the near future - where a super secret military organization SHADO (Supreme Headquarters Alien Defense Organization) becomes operational. Its purpose, to defend Earth from an Alien race, which has been abducting humans from all corners of the planet for decades.

SHADO's cover is a London movie studio where their main headquarters are hidden deep below the surface. SHADO, run by the extremely dedicated "Studio Mogul" and SHADO Commander Ed Straker has a cadre of crack operatives with an arsenal of cutting edge futuristic weapons systems and hidden bases on earth and beyond. UFO is the first in a trilogy of tent-pole movies based on the 1970's cult TV show, UFO, created by Gerry Anderson. Written by DK

The casting so far seems a little weak. I am a big fan of the TV show Fringe and although I think that Joshua Jackson is a fine actor I am not so sure that he can pull off the role of Paul Foster. Heroes’ actress Ali Larter has been rumored to play the part of Virginia Lake, which should be interesting.
The approach taken by the studio is to start from the very beginning that is to say the first UFO series never existed. Is this a plus or a minus?

On one hand new fans will be able to catch up on SHADO and the players involved but I am pretty sure that more than a few die hard fans will not be happy with what the writers and producers will do with their beloved charters in the remake.

On the other hand it will take time to explain who SHADO is and what they do; this will probably slow down the pace of the first half of the movie and bore those who are already familiar with the program. Will the producers and director stay true to the original cast, probably not?
A few years ago when I wrote my very own outline and summary for UFO the movie my approach was a bit different, okay it was a lot different. In my story SHADO was secretly resurrected when entire groups of people had gone missing at the same time. It is a joint effort between the US and Brittan with mobiles stationed around the world. Commander Ed Straker was replaced by his nephew who had the benefit of his uncle’s counsel before he passed away. Needless to say everything has been updated and there is one Skydiver for each ocean, The Atlantic, Pacific, Arctic, Indian, and Southern ocean.
I don’t want to give away the whole story but I will say that the aliens manage to build a secret base/laboratory in an isolated area on Earth. There are several large specially equipped alien ships and several cloning experts from around the world have gone missing. Straker and company have several deadly encounters with the alien force on Earth as well as Moon base where the interceptors now have more than one weapon to fire. By the halfway mark thousands of people have been abducted and a member of SHADO has gone undercover.

There are so many great stories that can be written around this secret origination and as I have already said I am optimistic that they can pull it off. There is a lot riding on the first movie since there are already plans to turn it into a trilogy over the next ten years. According to reports the first movie is due out sometimes next year (2011) hence the title UFO 2011, but with all the buzz about 2012 and the new X Files movie I hope the release date does not clash with other big name motion pictures. As they say, timing is everything.

What’s going on?

Jesse Ventura is an interesting fellow. This ex-governor of Minnesota decided to host a TV show titled Conspiracy Theory with Jesse Ventura I was not surprised. Anyone over the age of ten knows that TV shows are canceled because of bad ratings so hyping the show was also expected.

“Jesse Ventura and a team of expert investigators examine some of the most frightening and mysterious conspiracy allegations of our time.”

Under normal circumstances I would not have given this program a second thought but when an ex governor of a major state has a guest on his show that makes the statement “the US government for the last 10 years have been on a crash shelter building program from coast to coast” it makes me wonder

A. Is it true?

B. why would the government need so many under ground bunkers?

The show goes on to say that the government has built a massive bunker under Denver airport which according to Google maps is thirty miles away from the city of Denver Co. but only 98 miles from Peterson Air Force Base the new home of The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) Is this a coincidence? Why was the airport built so far away from the city? Conspiracy theorists believe that an underground tunnel connecting the two points has or is being constructed in time to meet the December 21, 2012 deadline.

With all of the reporting going on we know that the seed vault is real but again the timing is curious. Construction on the seed vault took less than a year at a cost of 9 million dollars. The Svalbard Global Seed Vault opened officially on February 26, 2008. I think that it’s a great idea but why wasn’t this done twenty or thirty years ago, why now?

Are you one of those multi-taskers who watch TV while tweeting, talking on the phone, or reading your e-mail? If you are you may have to make an exception and put those tasks on hold when you watch the paranormal TV show Fringe. This is not a show where everyone but the mailman, sorry mail carrier, has a secret power. Many of the episodes are original ideas that are converted into well written stories about strange and unusual occurrences usually designed to scare the hell out of you. Here is the plot summary from the IMDB

“The FBI teams up with a formerly-institutionalized scientist - who was performing experiments on the fringe of real science - and his son to investigate weird crimes that are seemingly part of a larger pattern, and may be connected with a global company called massive Dynamics.”

What do you get when you put together a team that includes an FBI agent an eccentric mad scientist, and his Son with a questionable background? You get a fresh interesting program that pushes the boundaries of the imagination.

Co-created by J.J. Abrams and staring Anna Torv, Joshua Jackson, John Noble, Lance Reddick and Jasika Nicole Fringe deals with cases of extremely rare diseases, people with unusual psychic abilities, and weird human experimentation that usually goes wrong. There is also a continuing storyline involving a dangerous parallel universe. Star Trek’s Leonard Nimoy plays a recurring role. Fringe is now in its second season and will probably be around for a while.

If you tune in expecting to see scantly clad women and buff guys running around with their shirts off each week you will be disappointed. These guys want to tell you a story. Along the way there are twists and turns so you need to keep up. Fringe has been nominated for a Visual Effects Society Award but don’t let that fool you it’s the story lines and great acting that will get you hooked on this series.

So put down the phone and get Fringed.

Well if that’s what you are expecting to see in the new Sherlock Holmes then you are in for a shock. The new Sherlock Holmes played by actor Robert Downey Jr. is everything that the old Sherlock Holmes was and more. This game’s afoot is an understatement. This detective is more gritty and aggressive but when it comes to observations and the power of deduction Holmes hasn’t missed a step.

In this latest adaptation the pipe smoking fictional detective Holmes is as physical as he is smart and his side kick Dr. John Watson played by actor Jude Law is no push over either. He holds his own against Holmes sometimes manipulating ways and shows that he can carry his weight in a fight.

In this story Holmes and Watson race around London trying to catch a killer before he can carry out his diabolical plan. There are a string of dead bodies as well as some humorous moments along the way to the big climax.

This well written story stays true to Holmes basic strength of using his keen ability to notice things that most of us would overlook but it also explores his weaknesses. The end of this action packed story definitely opened the door for a second and maybe a series of movies. I have a feeling that we will be seeing more of Baker Street’s most famous resident in the near future.

Many light years from our Milky Way is a galaxy made up of more than two dozen alien planets where advanced societies of good and evil have clashed for thousands of years. The powerful Planetary Alliance (comprised of eighteen member planets) dominates the region and is almost always involved in the never ending encounters with those who seek to destroy them and become the dominate power in the galaxy. Planets like Deltor, Tygalon, Nep’o, Xanar and Natropi are just a few of the Planetary Alliance members but near the center of this strange and distant place is the newly terra formed planet called Earth 2.

How did human life forms from planet Earth come to exist among such advanced societies where even the weather is controlled by machines called enviormentilizers?

The answer to that question lies in Terror on Telderan, a short story that begins in the earth year 1990. It is the prequel to the novel Escape 2 Earth 2012. Due to the reckless actions of the leader of Otar Old Earth no longer exists, well not in the way that we know it. Right before the destruction of Old Earth on December 21, 2012 with the help from a secret alien origination known only as Earth Guardians we find ourselves living on Earth 2, a new planet with a new beginning but all is not well.

It is now eight years later and life on the pristine new planet Earth is beginning to seem normal again however millions of humans are stranded on a dying earth left behind. Trapped and forced into slavery by the bitter and sadistic dictator Taz a plea for help is sent out. In this strange new E2E universe, this new galaxy, the humans of Earth2 have made several allies but have also made a few enemies along the way. Enemies who have vowed to totally destroy us all.

In the second book of the series Return 2 Earth we find ourselves trying to rescue those millions left back on Old Earth, a broken wasteland of a planet where the human’s days are numbered. The task is difficult especially now that there is a traitor in our mist, one that had been able to telegraph our every move to the brutal leader who holds our people captive and wants to erase us from the galaxy. Victory is at hand but it comes at a very heavy price. In the year 2022 we find that the tables are turned, it is the Planetary Alliance and non alliance planets within the galaxy, our new galaxy that are in jeopardy and we are the only ones that can save them. Deadly rouge Warriors from the planet Deltor, malfunctioning computers, and sabotaged transport ships are just the tip of the iceberg in this all out life or death situation for the entire alliance of planets. During the chaos intergalactic detective Da’Quan is summoned by the Planetary Alliance in the short story Planet of Doom, but Da’Qauan is pre occupied dealing with angry killer androids on the planet Akanon better known as the planet of doom. Who is behind the mass destruction that threatens to bring down the entire galaxy and will the people of Earth 2 be able to restore order or is this the end?

For the better part of a half century I have met my share of successful people and in most cases I am sorry to say that I was better off with the illusion rather than the reality of who or what I expected them to be.

During the past two years it appears that the pendulum has swung in the opposite direction. They say that if you want to be successful in a particular field you should learn from those who have succeeded in that area, what you aren’t told is that acquiring that education often comes with a steep price tag. Purchasing books, attending seminars, and buying DVDs, CDs etc. from the likes of The Donald, Suze Orman, or dare I say, Tiger Woods appears to be the norm however, over the past two years I have met three individuals who have changed my somewhat jaded opinion on the topic. Actor John Billingsley, writers L.A. Banks and Jonathan Maberry are three of the most down to earth people that I have ever met.

This past Sunday my daughter and I decided to take a ride to the Barnes and Noble in Willow Grove, Pa. to attend the monthly gathering of a group meeting called the Writers Coffeehouse. The online invitation describes the gathering as “a bunch of writers sitting around talking about writing…with coffee. No agenda…just chat about the latest trends in the industry, about markets, about pitching and selling, about frustration, about keeping the inner fires alight, about dealing with our families, about how damn tough it is to make it as a writer at the best of times and what writers can do to stay afloat in these troubled economic waters.”

Wow, my first thought was, hey this guy must have been following me around. He knows exactly what I have been dealing with lately. I have been an author for sometime now and the one thing that you quickly learn is that being around great writers will help make you a better writer. The gathering was informal and everyone was given a chance to speak. Mr. Maberry moderated the event. His extensive knowledge of the industry is impressive. During the three hour session Mr. Maberry along with a little help from his friends in the Liars Club (a group of networking publishing professionals) answered questions and gave sound advice on everything from signing autographs to setting goals when you are writing a novel.

Last month I was invited to sit on a few panels at Phil Con in Cherry Hill N.J. My first panel was an hour before Mr. Maberry’s True Blood panel and since just about everyone in my family watches the show we sat in on the panel. On the two occasions that I have been in his company he has always been willing to freely share his knowledge of the business and his personal experiences along with a few do’s and don’ts without being preachy or condescending, there’s no pretentious B.S.

During the Writers Coffeehouse a variety of subjects were discussed including editing your work, drive by book signings, word count, how to push through a mental wall, and more. Those who say that if you want to be successful in a particular field you should lean from those who have succeeded in that area are right but, it’s even better when there are no strings attached.

Planet of Doom (An Escape 2 Earth Short Story)

Yesterday I released a free science fiction short story, and so far the downloads have exceeded my expectations. I just posted it yesterday, I didn't do any promotions and it's already gotten as half as many downloads as some of my other short stories, that's been up for much longer. This one is different than the other short stories, Dimensions in Time, Lost in Translation and A Matter of time.

Planet of Doom an Escape 2 Earth Short Story

This one is titled Planet of Doom and it introduces a new character in the Escape 2 Earth universe. This story takes place in the Escape 2 Earth universe, but you do not have to read Escape 2 Earth or Return 2 Earth to understand it, but if you did you would have a better understanding but those two books aren't essential to read to enjoy the story. This story is more connected to the third novel than the previous two, but the third one isn't out yet, so it's all good.

The story begins after Return 2 Earth, the Planetary Alliance have requested the services of intergalactic detective Da’Quan to find the rouge Deltorian warriors Dajus and Mallobo for their crimes. Before Da'Quan can begin he is trapped on Akanon, also called Planet Doom. He learns that Akanon is controlled by humanoid killer robots. He must escape and return to his mission in time before the robots find and kill him.

Sounds good right? Good enough to jump at this free short story, did I mention that it is free?

Doctor Who is one of the very few shows on TV today that I would call great entertainment. I have been a fan for over twenty years and yes it was hard to watch when it began spiraling out of control during the years of the 7th Doctor (Sylvester McCoy) and his companion Ace (Sophie Aldred). I was happy to see that when the show was resurrected the producers went back to the roots of the original show and brought back old enemies like the Daleks, the Sontarans, and the Cyberman. In addition to writing good stories they also did a great job with casting the actors. Life was good, so you can image my surprise when I heard that Russell T. Davies and David Tennant were both leaving the show.

I recently attended this year’s PhilCon 2009 and listened to a group of Dr. Who panelist share their thoughts about the new Doctor. Although there were a few cracks about the age of the new Doctor for the most part the general consensus was to take a wait and see attitude. I am, on the other hand less optimistic that the 26 year old Matt Smith can pull it off.

Will the new young Doctor be pulled over by the Inter Galactic Police for flying the Tardis under age?

Also discussed was the upcoming (for us who have to wait for BBC America) Doctor Who: The Waters of Mars. I wondered how so many people were able to see the special before I did, but my daughter explained that there are ways. I think I'll just sit tight and wait for it to air. The panelists had very good things to say about the special so my interest is a bit more than just piqued.

I suspect that the new producer/writer Steven Moffat wanted a younger doctor so that he could add more romance to the show. I read somewhere that he intends to make several changes. Mr. Moffat’s resume is solid and he appears to be the logical replacement for the departing Davies but new guys always want to leave their mark and that makes me nervous. Will he redesign the Tardis? Will the doctor have a girlfriend? Will he bring back the Time Lords planet of Gallifrey, only time will tell?
